Elke Brutsaert
"Mountain Ellie," as Schwinn rider Elke Brutsaert is known, is powerful on the bike, but quiet off it. The buff and soft-spoken graduate of the University of Maine has consistently ridden with the best in the world over her decade-long career. The Brutsaerts introduced their little phenom to sports at a young age, towing her about on Nordic skis as a child. Elke would go on to compete as a collegiate heptathlete, and the fateful foot injury on the running track landed her on the bike for rehab. Her talent on two wheels shone immediately. Soon she evolved from road cycling to the dirt and has been a mainstay in the women's dual/downhill scene through the '90s and into the new millennium. more >>
Jacquie Phelan
Born in San Francisco CA 1955, Jacquie was a commuting cyclist as a youngster in LA: mom dreaded driving. Despite evidence of athletic potential, JP was steered toward a professional career -- preferably medicine. This provided an ideal challenge for a teenage feminist with authority issues. When she graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont, she moved to San Francisco, worked as an au pair, interned at the Women's Sports Foundation. It wasn't long before she saw the 1976 movie "Breaking Away" and launched herself into road and mountain bike racing. more >>
Jen Klish
Jennifer Susan Klish was born in Lansing, Michigan, in 1970, but most of her formative years were spent in Minnesota. At the age of 18, Jen was doing double duty as an aspiring road racer, while working on a philosophy degree at the University of Minnesota. On a sub- zero winter training ride, Jen thought, "I don't have to do this! I'm going to move to California." A few months later, the charismatic diva was living at a friend's house in Oakland, road racing, and wrenching for AFRAM, an organization that hosts the "Ride Across America" bicycle tours. Jen moved to Berkeley, and began working at a co-op bike store called the Missing Link. Her detail oriented, but not freudian, thoroughness led Klish to be the one of the best Bike Mechanics in the Bay Area. She became a cartoonist on the side, and hand-drew advertisements for the Missing Link, which appeared in the San Francisco Bay Guardian and East Bay Express for over 7 years. more >>
