Female Racers In New Film's Limelight

SAN FRANCISCO, CA- Most movies or videos about mountain bikers show one gnarly downhill run after another. But a San Francisco filmmaker is focusing her camera on another angle of mountain bikers. Nicole Hahn made a film featuring current and past top women mountain bike and downhill racers and took a look at their lives on and off the bike. She even took up racing herself to learn what it's like. "For the two years she was involved in racing, she did interviews. Her film looks at the week in the life of downhillers," said Jacquie Phelan, a former mountain bike racer. Phelan is one of the racers featured in the film, along with downhillers Marla Streb, Missy Giove, Elke Brutsaert, and Cheri Elliott. One scene shows Giove chopping food in the kitchen, another features Phelan talking to women at a WOMBATs mountain bike event, which she founded. "The big theme's in a racer's life are food, the weather and doing well. And Nicole does a fantastic job treating the things that are in a racers life. And it's nice to have the focus on women, " Phelan said. This year, the film will make the circuit of film festivals. Hahn then has plans to get the film shown on cable television.
